Description
Over all length 4 to 5.8mm. A small dark muscid with red eyes. The male’s eyes almost touch but the females are separated by the frons which is approximately 1/3 the head width.
Habitat
Woodland edge, hedgerows. It seems to prefer damper habitats. The larvae feed in dung.
Status and Distribution
Fairly common and widespread with a southern and westerly bias in Britain. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best Time to See
March to September.
